8:45  Keynote Address: "Roots of Change for the Better: Growing Quality Root Systems for a 
  Sustainable Urban Forest"  
Dr. Ed Gilman, Professor, University of Florida.  Ed will take you on a journey starting
with seeds and cuttings through production, planting, and establishment. You will leave
this one-of-a-kind presentation with a fresh perspective on trees from the ground down.

10:15  Trends in Nursery Crop Development
Dr. Ryan Contreras, Assistant Professor, Horticulture Department, Oregon State Univer-
sity, Corvallis, OR.  Ryan will discuss Oregon State’s nursery crop breeding program focusing
on development of sterile forms of invasive or potentially invasive species as well as induced
sterility of species that produce large amounts of litter from fruit or seed, and the contribu-
tion of plant breeding to diversity in landscapes. 
 
11:00 Pruning Roots and Stems for Improved Health and Tree Stability
Dr. Ed Gilman. There is new research and practice showing the benefits of appropriate
pruning and developing strategies for managing trees early to prevent problems later. You
will learn techniques you can use next week in your daily work on trees of all ages.

1:00  Street Tree Spacing Standards
Terry Flatley, Urban Forestry and Natural Resources Manager, City of Renton, WA
Terry will explain the process the City of Renton utilized in developing wider standards for
street tree spacing with the City’s Community and Economic Department and adoption by
City Council.

Jennifer Karps, Grey to Green Coordinator, City of  Portland, OR Environmental Services
Bureau 
Jennifer will share strategies for developing community tree-planting programs and the
practical application of that strategy through partnerships, team-based program develop-
ment, and adaptive management.
